Orca vs Prisma Cloud when the CNAPP choice is SideScanning or a module stack with runtime agents
Orca SideScanning with the optional Orca Sensor beside Prisma Cloud Foundations, Advanced, and self-hosted Compute Edition, now metered alongside Cortex Cloud workload units.
Twelve AWS accounts, nobody sure what runs in half of them, and a runtime team that refuses another host agent. That ticket starts most CNAPP evaluations between these two. Both sell agentless posture, vulnerability, identity, and data scanning across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. They split on how deep the agentless read goes and where runtime blocking is licensed.
Orca reads runtime block storage out of band through SideScanning and rebuilds each workload without code running inside it, with the Orca Sensor as an optional runtime add-on. Palo Alto Networks sells Prisma Cloud as Foundations for agentless posture, Advanced for host, container, and serverless runtime plus WAAS, and Compute Edition for self-hosting, with Cortex Cloud Posture Management and Cloud Runtime Security as the newer workload-unit packaging.
Buy Orca when agentless coverage of every workload must come first with runtime added only where needed. Buy Prisma Cloud when runtime protection, WAAS, and a self-hosted console must sit in one Palo Alto contract.
Overview
| Primary use case | Agentless-first CNAPP built on SideScanning plus context-aware risk scoring, attack paths, and reachability across multicloud accounts | CNAPP modules for posture, vulnerability, identity, data, and code scanning, plus runtime workload protection and WAAS on Advanced or Compute Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Day-to-day workflow | Connect cloud accounts read-only, review prioritized alerts by risk score and attack path, and scope the Orca Sensor to workloads that need runtime detection | Choose the licensed module, deploy Defenders where runtime is in scope, and work posture, runtime, and WAAS findings in the Prisma Cloud or Cortex Cloud console |
| Main buying consideration | Sales quote. No public USD SKU on orca.security when checked 10 Oct 2026. AWS Marketplace private offers carry the contract | Prisma Cloud credits for Enterprise modules and Cortex Cloud workload units for Posture Management and Cloud Runtime Security. No public dollar per credit or workload on the license pages checked 10 Oct 2026 |
We reviewed Orca SideScanning and Orca Sensor documentation and the Lemonade case study, plus Prisma Cloud license documentation for Foundations, Advanced, and Compute Edition and the Cortex Cloud Posture Management and Cloud Runtime Security packaging, on 10 Oct 2026. We did not run either platform in a paid tenant.

Editions and pricing
Neither vendor prints a dollar. Orca quotes a platform; Palo Alto quotes credits or workload units depending on which packaging the order uses.
| How it is sold | Orca Cloud Security Platform on a sales quote, with the Orca Sensor as an optional runtime component | Prisma Cloud Enterprise credits by module, or Cortex Cloud workload units for Posture Management and Cloud Runtime Security. Compute Edition sold for self-hosted deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Figure on the public page | No USD on orca.security when checked 10 Oct 2026 | No USD per credit or per workload on Palo Alto license pages checked 10 Oct 2026 |
| What the unit counts | Cloud workloads and assets in scope of the platform quote | Credits consumed per resource type and module, or protected workloads in Cortex Cloud packaging |
Agentless scanning and prioritization
Both platforms scan workloads without agents. The documented split is a block-storage rebuild with one risk score versus a module set where agentless is the Foundations tier.
| Agentless read | SideScanning reads block storage out of band and rebuilds the filesystem for vulnerabilities, malware, misconfigurations, secrets, and sensitive data | Agentless workload scanning in Cloud Security Foundations snapshots volumes for vulnerabilities and compliance findings |
|---|---|---|
| Risk scoring | Multi-factor score on severity, exploitability, accessibility, and business impact, with attack paths and reachability | Posture and vulnerability findings with attack path analysis across CSPM, CIEM, and DSPM modules licensed on the order |
| Coverage beyond workloads | CSPM, CIEM, DSPM, and AI security posture on the same Unified Data Model | CSPM, CIEM, DSPM, AI-SPM, ASM, KSPM, and CI/CD posture in the Posture Management bundle |
Runtime protection and deployment
Both now sell runtime. The split is an optional sensor on an agentless platform versus Defenders on a runtime license.
| Runtime component | Optional Orca Sensor for real-time cloud detection and response on selected workloads | Defenders for hosts, containers, and serverless on Cloud Security Advanced or Cloud Runtime Security |
|---|---|---|
| Web application protection | Not part of the Orca platform documentation reviewed | WAAS for web application and API protection on Advanced, Compute Edition, and Cloud Runtime Security |
| Self-hosted option | SaaS only | Compute Edition is customer-hosted with agentless and agent-based protection |
Favor Orca when the documented requirement is SideScanning of every workload without code in the environment, one multi-factor risk score, and an optional Orca Sensor where runtime matters. Favor Prisma Cloud when the documented requirement is Defenders for host, container, and serverless runtime, WAAS, Compute Edition self-hosting, and credit or Cortex Cloud workload-unit packaging.
FAQs
Is Prisma Cloud now Cortex Cloud?
Palo Alto Networks sells Cortex Cloud Posture Management and Cloud Runtime Security by protected workload alongside Prisma Cloud license tiers. Confirm which packaging the order names.
Does Orca need an agent?
No for core coverage. SideScanning reads block storage through cloud APIs. The Orca Sensor is optional for real-time runtime detection.
Which product offers WAAS?
Prisma Cloud, on Cloud Security Advanced, Compute Edition, and Cloud Runtime Security.
Can either be self-hosted?
Prisma Cloud Compute Edition is customer-hosted. Orca is delivered as SaaS.
Does either publish a price?
No dollar appeared on orca.security or Palo Alto license pages when checked 10 Oct 2026.
