Proofpoint vs Mimecast: Core Email Protection vs Cybersecurity plan tiers across gateway and API

Proofpoint when the hire is Core Email Protection on SEG, API, or both, with TAP URL Defense and Email Fraud Defense as named modules beside optional Continuity and Archive. Mimecast when the hire is Critical / Advanced / Premium Cybersecurity plans on Cloud Gateway or Cloud Integrated, with URL Protect, Browser Isolation, BEC models, and Continuity listed on those plans, plus Archive when retention is in scope.

A classic email-security shortlist still starts with the same bad day: a phishing URL that looked safe until click time, a finance impersonation that passed basic authentication, or Exchange Online slowing enough that the help desk needs mail to keep flowing. Gateway versus API deploy, and which modules sit on the order form, change how that day closes more than a brand preference.

Proofpoint Core Email Protection deploys as an MX-based SEG, as an API path (including Microsoft Graph for Microsoft 365), or as a unified SEG+API model announced for mid-2026. Targeted Attack Protection adds attachment and URL Defense with click-time analysis. Email Fraud Defense is the authentication and lookalike companion. Enterprise Continuity and Archive are adjacent modules on many quotes. Mimecast deploys as MX-based Cloud Gateway or API-based Cloud Integrated for Microsoft 365 / Google. New buyers after 15 August 2025 buy Critical / Advanced / Premium Cybersecurity plans; the public plan cards checked 3 Oct 2026 list AI BEC models, social graphing, on-click URL analysis, QR protection, sandboxing, Browser Isolation, Email Backup and Recovery, and Email Continuity (Cloud Gateway) on those plans. Email Archive and DMARC Analyzer sit on related paths. Adjacent API-first desks sit on Abnormal vs Sublime; the broader shortlist is email security tools.

Mimecast

Mimecast email security product marketing

Proofpoint’s recent first-party email signal is the unified SEG and API architecture announced 23 March 2026 (model dated 30 June 2026), with Core Email Protection API called out in Threat Protection Workbench on 17 July 2026, including Satori Abuse Mailbox Agent workflows. Mimecast’s packaging signal for new buyers is the Critical / Advanced / Premium email Cybersecurity plan set required from 15 August 2025. The public plan cards checked 3 Oct 2026 list Continuity, Browser Isolation, Backup and Recovery, URL/on-click analysis, and BEC models on those plans; a line-by-line Critical versus Advanced versus Premium delta beyond that shared list was not printed as distinct bullets on the page, so confirm tier differences on the quote.

Editions and pricing

Neither vendor publishes a simple self-serve price for a full enterprise email program. Quotes still turn on mailbox count, SEG versus API deploy, modules or plan tier, and whether Continuity or Archive sits on the same order form.

What the invoice coversCore Email Protection plus optional TAP, Email Fraud Defense, Archive, Enterprise Continuity, awareness, and collaboration add-ons as scoped on the order formEmail Cybersecurity plan tier as listed (threat controls plus Continuity and Backup and Recovery on the public cards), with Archive / GCI and awareness or insider-risk products as related purchases when needed
Main buying considerationWill you staff Core Email Protection on SEG, API, or both, and which modules (TAP, Email Fraud Defense, Continuity, Archive) are on the same order? Will you staff Critical, Advanced, or Premium on Cloud Gateway or Cloud Integrated, and does Continuity on Cloud Gateway match the outage path you need?

SEG and API RFPs often end in vendor swap fatigue. Score gateway versus API deploy, the threat modules you will operate, and whether Continuity or Archive is on the same order, not the hope that either product ends phishing or BEC forever.

Threat protection and URL rewrite

Proofpoint ProofpointMimecast Mimecast
Threat coreCore Email Protection with multi-model behavioral detection, sandboxing for URLs and attachments, spam/malware, and pre- and post-delivery paths on SEG and API deploysAdvanced Email Security on Cybersecurity plans: AI BEC models, attachment sandboxing, malware and spam scanning, outbound and internal scanning, and collaboration threat options as listed on plan
URL rewrite / click-timeTAP URL Defense rewrites URLs and re-checks at click time; URL Isolation for Very Attacked People where the bundle includes itOn-click URL analysis / URL Protect; Browser Isolation for suspicious destinations; QR-code URL extraction and scanning as listed on plan cards
User-visible rewriteRewritten links are the tradeoff for click-time protection; VAP isolation changes the browse path for high-risk usersRewrites commonly land on mimecastprotect-style proxies; users may see the proxy host instead of the raw destination
Main buying considerationDo you need TAP click-time defense (and VAP isolation where licensed) on the SEG/API deploy you chose?Do you need on-click URL analysis, Browser Isolation, and QR scanning as day-to-day link controls on the Cybersecurity plan?

URL rewrite is not unique to Mimecast; Proofpoint TAP does the same class of click-time control. The decision is which rewrite and isolation path your users and SOC will tolerate. Rewrite reduces click-time risk; it does not guarantee every delayed weaponization is caught.

Impersonation and BEC

Proofpoint ProofpointMimecast Mimecast
Impersonation stackEmail Fraud Defense for DMARC program tooling (including a guided path toward p=reject), hosted SPF/DKIM/DMARC/BIMI, lookalike domain detection, and supplier risk signals alongside gateway or API enforcement. Reaching and holding p=reject still depends on your domain inventory and operationsAI-powered BEC models, social graphing, and dynamic bannering on Cybersecurity plans; DMARC Analyzer as a related product when domain authentication is a separate program. Model holds and banners reduce risk; they are not a guaranteed stop for every BEC attempt
What changes for finance / execsVAP-oriented controls where licensed, and Email Fraud Defense visibility into spoof and lookalike risk on your domains and suppliersRelationship and banner cues for unusual senders; hold/reject paths when BEC models fire on policy
Main buying considerationIs Email Fraud Defense (DMARC tooling and lookalike/supplier visibility) a first-class module next to Core Email Protection? Are plan BEC models and banners enough for the finance queue, or do you also need DMARC Analyzer as its own program?

Between these two, Proofpoint documents Email Fraud Defense as the authentication and brand-fraud companion to Core Email Protection. Mimecast documents BEC models and social graphing inside Advanced Email Security on Cybersecurity plans, with DMARC Analyzer available when domain authentication is its own workstream. Neither product’s feature list is a promise that every spoof or BEC attempt fails.

Archiving and continuity

Proofpoint ProofpointMimecast Mimecast
ContinuityEnterprise Continuity: emergency inbox / Outlook or web access with recent mail (documented around a 30-day window) when primary mail is down; sold as a continuity module alongside protection, not assumed on every Core Email Protection quoteEmail Continuity on Cloud Gateway packaging, listed on Critical / Advanced / Premium Cybersecurity plan cards; confirm Continuity behavior if you deploy Cloud Integrated only
Archive / retentionProofpoint Archive (formerly Enterprise Archive) for cloud retention, eDiscovery, and optional Supervision; separate from Core Email Protection on many quotesEmail Archive / GCI plans (Core, Pro, Max) for eDiscovery, legal hold, and collaboration capture; related to but not identical to the email Cybersecurity plan SKU
Backup angleContinuity and Archive are the named recovery/retention products; confirm mailbox backup scope on the order formMailbox Backup and Recovery listed on current email plans (successor path from Sync and Recover for Exchange / M365 workloads)
Main buying considerationWill Continuity and Archive be separate line items on the Proofpoint quote, or is threat protection alone the hire?Does Continuity on Cloud Gateway (and Backup and Recovery on plan) match the outage and recovery jobs, knowing Archive is still a related purchase?

Continuity is one buying criterion, not the whole shortlist. If mail must keep moving when Microsoft or the mail relay hiccups, Mimecast’s plan cards list Continuity on Cloud Gateway packaging. If the harder weekly queue is TAP and Email Fraud Defense operations, Proofpoint’s module split can fit when Continuity is added only if that job is on the quote. Gateway versus API deploy still comes first.

Where they overlap

Both compete as commercial email security platforms for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace: MX gateway and/or API deploy, spam and malware filtering, URL rewrite with click-time checks, attachment sandboxing, BEC/impersonation controls, continuity and archive options, and sales-led packaging. An RFP that only says “replace our SEG” will get adjacent demos. Score deploy model first (Proofpoint SEG/API versus Mimecast Cloud Gateway / Cloud Integrated), then threat modules and plan tier, then whether Continuity and Archive sit on the same order. Feature names for DMARC tooling and BEC models are controls you operate, not guaranteed outcomes.

Broader email shortlists sit under email security tools. API-first behavioral desks are a different hire on Abnormal vs Sublime.

When to use both

Running Proofpoint and Mimecast as duplicate inline gateways on the same MX path usually doubles rewrite friction and triage. The narrow split that sometimes appears is Mimecast Continuity or Archive owned by messaging/compliance while Proofpoint owns Core Email Protection and TAP for the SOC, or Mimecast as the gateway while Email Fraud Defense or DMARC Analyzer is evaluated only for authentication. If one team owns both queues, pick the deploy and packaging you will staff: Proofpoint modules on SEG/API, or a Mimecast Cybersecurity plan on Gateway or Integrated.

Choose Proofpoint when you will staff Core Email Protection on SEG, API, or both, with TAP and Email Fraud Defense as named modules, and you will add Enterprise Continuity or Archive only when those jobs are on the quote. Choose Mimecast when you will staff Critical / Advanced / Premium on Cloud Gateway or Cloud Integrated, with Continuity listed on Cloud Gateway plan packaging, and Archive when retention and eDiscovery are part of the same vendor conversation. Treat DMARC tooling and BEC models as controls to operate, not as guaranteed outcomes.

FAQs

Is Proofpoint only a secure email gateway?

No. Core Email Protection deploys as SEG, API, or both. Proofpoint announced a unified SEG and API model on 23 March 2026 (model dated 30 June 2026). This page focuses on the email threat suite, not other Proofpoint portfolios outside email protection.

Does Mimecast include Continuity on new email plans?

The Critical / Advanced / Premium plan cards checked 3 Oct 2026 list Email Continuity (Cloud Gateway). Confirm Continuity behavior if you deploy Cloud Integrated only, and confirm any Critical versus Advanced versus Premium deltas on the quote.

Does Proofpoint include Continuity by default?

Enterprise Continuity is a documented Proofpoint continuity product with emergency inbox access. Treat it as a module to confirm on the order form, not as automatic inclusion with every Core Email Protection quote.

Where does archiving sit for each vendor?

Proofpoint Archive is the cloud archive / eDiscovery product (formerly Enterprise Archive). Mimecast Email Archive / GCI plans cover retention, legal hold, and related governance. Both are commonly adjacent to, not identical to, the threat-protection SKU.

Do either publish list prices?

Not for full enterprise email packaging on the public product pages checked on 3 Oct 2026. Expect mailbox-, deploy-, and module- or plan-scoped sales quotes for both.

Is this a hands-on bake-off?

No. The comparison uses first-party packaging and product pages, plan and module documentation, announcements, and community cross-check only. We did not install either product in a paid lab tenant.
